This phase is relatively simple.

For 3 days after completing your drops continue the 500 calorie diet.

For 3 weeks immediately following the last day of the low calorie diet you are allowed to eat any type of food you choose (avoiding sugars or starches). Or put very simply, eat the foods that were on your VLCD plan without the need to weigh your quantities or limit yourself to one vegetable per meal. SLOWLY add eggs, low fat cottage cheese or ricotta cheese, almonds, and very limited amounts of olive oil.

DON’T FORGET, you must continue to WEIGH YOURSELF DAILY.

During the first 3-4 days on maintenance, watch out for protein deprivation. If you begin to gain weight it is likely due to insufficient protein. To resolve this issue, eat protein every 3 hours for 3-4 days.

This will restock your protein supply and release the water weight. After the 1st three weeks of maintenance are over, you will slowly bring sugars and starches back into your diet for another 3 weeks. This will complete the maintenance phase. Please note that if you are doing multiple round of HCG, the maintenance phase will increase in length each time (page 27 in Pounds and Inches).

Foods to avoid during the first 3 weeks of maintenance:

  • No sugar, dextrose, sucrose, honey, molasses, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, or any sweetener
  • No starch, including breads, pastas, any wheat product, white rice, potatoes, yams, etc.
  • No artificial sweeteners, including aspartame, NutraSweet, Splenda, saccharin, etc.
  • No fast foods
  • No trans fats, including hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils
  • No nitrites

I repeat, you must absolutely weigh yourself every morning after first emptying your bladder.  It takes about three weeks after completing the low calorie diet before the weight stabilizes. As long as your weight stays within two pounds of the weight reached on the day of the last drop you are fine. The moment the scale goes beyond two pounds, even by only a few ounces, you must do the following steps:

  • Skip all food until 6:00 p.m. During this time you should drink as much water, up to one gallon, as you can.  In addition to the water, drink as much of the various teas that are recommended. You may use stevia in the teas. In the evening, eat the biggest steak you can from grass fed organic beef. The steak can be grilled or broiled and seasoned with pepper and herbs, but no salt. You may have either a large organic raw tomato or large organic raw apple. This all happens on the day of a two pound weight gain, not the day after!

Have I said that weighing yourself daily is vitally important? Because the hypothalamus is now corrected from its abnormal condition, when you gain weight the body will not store the excess in the secure abnormal fat reserves. This means that weight gain will now result in storing of fat evenly throughout the body in the normal or structural fat areas. This means that by looking in the minor, or by feeling how your clothes fit, will be misleading. You can actually gain ten to fifteen pounds and never notice it. This is why daily weighing is so important.

During the three weeks in maintenance monitor and be aware of your appetite. During this time you will notice you get full very quickly. Take note of the feeling of fullness and loss of appetite and stop eating.
In subsequent weeks, slowly begin to add a variety of foods back into your diet, always in moderation. A good place to start is with nuts and dairy products.
